For the Future...

High school is over now, but it doesn't mean I won't find time to work on TurtleStitch. I am bringing TurtleStitch to college with me and here my hopes: to bring together a group of university students to work on TurtleStitch to visit schools with university students to teach students to use the program to continue creating TurtleStitch cards - ones about creating other shapes, using various blocks, and questions I hope my peers would come up with as they are using the program I hope to learn more about filling in my stitches, as I have encountered before, and using variables differently than I usually do to get the full function out of it. As I experiment more with TurtleStitch, I know there will be more I want to learn about.  After the conference, it has inspired me to have TurtleStitch become an application. It would be great to optimize the site for the phone or tablet so many could bring it on the go, while they are travelling from place-to-place, or just to use...

Looking Back at the SCRATCHBDX2017 Conference

Image
I had the best week at the 2017 Scratch Conference in Bordeaux. I met so many amazing people and I'm glad to call everyone there my friend! During the conference, I went to Ignite Talks and Workshops. I learned so much, and it is fascinating how technology can provide many resources for people. The conference has made me realize everyone can be involved in the Scratch community even if they are new to coding. The TurtleStitch Short Talk and Poster session turned out to be a great success! It was great seeing the TurtleStitch cards finally printed, and I'm hoping it would make coding feel more welcoming for anyone starting to use TurtleStitch. Initially, I decided to create cards after asking myself what I wished was available for me when I first joined TurtleStitch. The Snap! manual was a great resource as it helped me understand the functions of the blocks, but I wished there was something more personalized for the program. I spent months coming up with essential tu...

Scratch Conference Next Week!

Hey all, I will be attending and be presenting at the Scratch Conference in Bordeaux next week! It is going to be amazing sharing the work I did with TurtleStitch with many of you. The TurtleStitch Cards will be available at the conference and I am hoping it will change the way many people think of coding. I am excited for next week. I hope to see you all! Best, Jennifer

Stitch Length

While making TurtleStitch cards, the question of stitch length has been coming up. In Brandon's comment regarding his "Hexagon Gone Mad" code , he stated he realized the "stitches are too long to print." This was his code :   The "move __ steps" motion block determines the length of the stitch, and in Brandon's code, he made the length 80. From my experience, the default stitch size is 10, so it is best to work around it. Here is the  revised code : In this revised code , I altered his "move 80 steps" to "move 10 steps" and placed it in the "repeat 8" block, which would keep Brandon's code the same, but with smaller stitches. If any questions come up, feel free to leave a comment!
